Accessing the virtual lab environment from a web browser

For users that would rather not configure the remote resources to be on their computers start menu, you can also access the virtual lab environment via your web browser.  For users running Windows, you will have your best experience if you use Internet Explorer (IE).  Other browsers will work, but there may be additional steps involved to open up an application.

Enter the following URL in your browser: https://rdweb.bridgewater.edu/rdweb 

The first time you visit this website if you are running IE, you will be asked to install an ActiveX plugin.  You can select Allow, if you wish.

Enter your username and password in the appropriate fields.  The screen shot below is using IE, where you have a choice of selecting if this is a public or private computer.  If you select that you are using a private computer, then your web session will last longer before you are auto logged out.  Users using other browsers do not have this choice and are logged in as if they are using a public computer, so your browser session will log you out sooner.  This does not affect your ability to use the virtual lab application.  As long as you are actively using the application, it will not disconnect.


After logging in, the page will refresh and preset you with your published applications and desktops.  Note: some applications may be found within folders.  

This has been done for organizational purposes.  Click on the icon of an application you wish to run from your PC.  

If you're using IE, the next thing you will see will be a connection warning.  This is a warning letting you know that a web application is trying to connect your computer to a remote server.  This is OK because that is exactly what you are trying to do.  As long as the publisher is bridgewater.edu and the remote computer and gateway server are bridgewater.edu addresses, this is fine.  Click on the Connect button and within a few moments the application will open on your computer.

 

If you are using a browser other than IE, you may be presented with the option to Open or Save a file to your PC.  This is the connection file that is needed to start the application.  In IE, clicking on the icon will launch the remote desktop connection application with the needed information.  For other browsers, you may need to save this file and then click on it to start the connection.

Below is what you may see if you use Firefox.  You can check the box "Do this automatically..." if you wish.  This will tell Firefox to launch downloads like this using Remote Desktop Connection from now on.  Then, click the OK button to launch the connection.

If you're using Chrome, then the connection file will download and show up at the bottom of the browser as shown below.  You can click on the download to open it, and then click on the Connect button to launch the application.  Or you can click on the small arrow beside the download and select "Always open files of this type".  After doing this, click on the connection file to open it.  From now on Chrome, will launch the remote desktop connection directly.

If you get a prompt asking you to enter your username and password again be sure to enter "bridgewater\" before your username as shown below.

Once the application is open on your computer, you may use it like you would any other application.  You will be able to save and open files from the S drive, as well as having access to save and open files from your local computer.  You will be able to print to deployed network printers, if you have any, the WEPA printers, or any local printers you may have attached to your personal computer.
