Malware Removal Information - Windows Defender Offline
Posted by - NA - on 31 July 2009 04:28 PM

One of the sure fire ways to remove malware is to boot your computer using an offline file scanner.  An offline file scanner is a specially built USB, CD or DVD that your computer can boot from.  Once the computer is booted into a special operating system on the device it will be able to run a file scan of the local computer’s hard drive.  Offline scans are helpful in finding particular kinds of malware that 'hide' from malware detection software that runs on the local computer when the standard operating system is in use.  These forms of malware have difficulty hiding from offline scanning tools.

If the IT center runs a malware scan on your computer we will use an offline scan tool and we encourage anyone who feels they may have malware on their computer to use the Microsoft’s Defender Offline to scan your computer for malware.  The benefit of doing this yourself is that you can often have a scan run and malware removed within a matter of a few hours where as if the system is brought to the IT center for a scan it may be up to 2 days before we will have the system back to you.

Here are the directions Microsoft provides in how to use their Windows Defender Offline scanning tool.  It is EXTREMLY IMPORTANT to note that if you use a USB drive this process will DELETE ALL the information on the drive.  Backup the files on the USB drive before you use this tool on the USB drive.

To use Windows Defender Offline, you need to follow four basic steps:

  1. Download Windows Defender Offline and create a CD, DVD, or USB flash drive.
  2. Restart your PC using the Windows Defender Offline media.
  3. Scan your PC for malicious and other potentially unwanted software.
  4. Remove any malware that is found from your PC.

Windows Defender Offline will walk you through the details of these four steps when you're using the tool. If you've been prompted in Microsoft Security Essentials or Windows Defender to download and run Windows Defender Offline, it's important that you do so, to make sure that your data and your PC isn't compromised.

To get started, find a blank CD, DVD, or USB flash drive with at least 250 MB of free space and then download and run the tool—the tool will help you create the removable media.

  • We recommend that you download Windows Defender Offline and create the CD, DVD, or USB flash drive on a PC that isn't infected with malware—the malware can interfere with the media creation.
