Recovering a Bitlocker Pin
Posted by Aaron Klein on 09 May 2013 09:26 AM

College issued laptops that are used by a single employee are required to utilize full disk encryption. For Windows based systems we utilize Windows Bitlocker which requires the entry of a PIN prior to allowing the computer to boot. Should the user forget their PIN they can recover it by either contacting the help desk or if they are on campus utilizing a self-service website.

If you have forgotten your PIN you can obtain a 48 digit recovery key by going to the self-service website while on campus. You will need to use a computer other than the laptop since you cannot boot into Windows.

First enter your campus username and password. Once you have done this you will see a webpage that looks similar to the one below.

Check the box next to "I have read and understand the above notice" and click Continue.

On the next page there will be a box to enter the Recovery KeyID. To see the recovery key press the ECS button when the "Enter the PIN for this drive." is being displayed on the screen.

The next screen that displays will provide you with 8 fields to enter the recovery key, the name of the computer and the Recovery Key ID. The recovery key is a 32 character alphanumeric code. You will need to enter the first 8 characters at a minimum. Once this has been put into field number 1 provide a reason for needing the recovery key by selecting one from the drop down menu, and then press the "Get Key" button. NOTE: Only the primary laptop user can obtain a Recovery Key using this method.  If you are not the primary laptop user on record for this device you must contact the help desk to obtain the Recovery Key.

Upon clicking the "Get Key" button in field 2 the 48 digit recovery key will be displayed. This key will need to be entered into the laptop. The laptop will validate each set of six digits while you’re entering. After entering the last digit of the recovery key the system will boot into windows.

Upon booting into windows the user should change their PIN.
