Using Soft Keys on Digital NEC Phones
Posted by Aaron Klein on 15 October 2010 09:14 AM

The digital phones used on campus have programmable soft keys just below the display.  These soft keys perform different functions depending on what state the phone is in.  For example, functions that are possible when the phone is idle (on hook) are different than those when the phone is in use.  This article's intent is to explain how to use the soft keys and what features are currently programmed and in which state those features will be available.

Where are Soft Keys?

Soft keys are the four keys directly below the LCD display and are between the round Exit and Help buttons.  The Help and Exit buttons are used to explain how each soft key feature works.  For example, if you press the Help button and then press the soft key that is labeled HSET on the display you will see the explanation as to what the HSET button does. Pressing the Help button a second, third, or fourth time will change the page to display explanation of further features.  There are up to four pages of soft keys for each phone state.  Press the Exit button to close out of the Help feature.

Soft Key Features

The following features are currently enabled as soft keys.

<<< and >>> - Previous page and Next page buttons.  Pressing the correct button will advance forward or backward through the four pages of soft keys.

HSET - Pressing the Headset button in the idle state will take the phone off hook and activate the headset if you have one.  If the phone is off hook in any state pressing this button will disconnect the call.  Not all offices make use of headsets.

FDB - Forward Busy. To set forwarding press this button when off hook and then dial the extension you wish to forward the phone to.  The display will show FORWARD SET and then the extension you’re forwarding to.  e.g., 3750 for voicemail.

When FDB is blinking this represents the feature is active and a forward is set.  If you press this button while the phone is idle it will display the extension that the phone is forwarded to.  If you press this button when the phone is off hook it will cancel the forward.

FDA - Forward ALL.  To set forwarding press this button when off hook and then dial the extension you wish to forward the phone to.  The display will show FORWARD SET and then the extension you’re forwarding to.  e.g., 3750 for voicemail.

When FDA is blinking this represents the feature is active and a forward is set.  If you press this button while the phone is idle it will display the extension that the phone is forwarded to. The forward all feature sends all calls to the extension that the phone is forwarded to.  If you press this button when the phone is off hook it will cancel the forward.

PICK - Call pickup. This button, when the phone is off hook, will permit you to 'pick' or grab an incoming call to your line and answer the incoming call.  This is not used by every office.

VOICE - Voice Call.  This key permits you to page another digital phone.  When using this feature wait 3 seconds after pressing before speaking.  This will activate the speaker on the destination phone after sounding a tone.  This can be useful for intra-office communications.

MUTE - This will temporarily mute the MIC on your side of the conversation.  This feature is only available in phone states where a call is in progress.

CONF - The Conference button will bring parties together into a three way conference call.  This button is only available once you have established an active connection with the second party after placing the first party on hold by pressing the Transfer button.
